Pricing & billing

How much does a visit cost?

$89 per hour, with no call-out fee. You pay for time and results — nothing for us turning up.
Most jobs are completed in 60–90 minutes. We bill in half-hour increments after the first hour. We quote an estimated time before starting any work.
If parts are needed (such as a replacement battery, fan, or RAM stick), we quote on those separately and won’t order anything without your approval first. See our full pricing page.

Is there a minimum charge?

The minimum charge is one hour ($89). Most jobs either fit comfortably within an hour or are estimated upfront so you know what to expect before we begin.

What if the problem can’t be fixed in one visit?

We’re honest about this upfront. If a job is going to require more than one visit — for example, a complex data recovery or a hardware repair where parts need to be ordered — we tell you before starting rather than running the clock. You’ll always know what you’re up for before we proceed.

Do you charge more for weekend or evening visits?

No — the $89/hr rate applies to all visits during our operating hours: Monday–Friday 7am–7pm and Saturday 7am–5pm. There are no after-hours surcharges within those hours.

How do I pay?

Payment is due at the end of the visit. We accept cash, card, and bank transfer. We’ll send through a receipt after the visit.

How visits work

Do I need to bring my computer anywhere?

No — we come to your home. You don’t need to unplug, pack up, or travel anywhere. We work on your equipment in your own environment, which also means we can see exactly how everything is connected and test that it works properly before leaving.

What happens during a typical visit?

Every visit starts with a conversation — what’s been going wrong, what you need it to do, and what you’ve already tried. From there:

1. We diagnose the problem (usually 5–15 minutes)
2. We explain what we found and what we’re going to do
3. We do the work — and explain it as we go if you’re interested
4. We test everything before leaving
5. We answer any questions and leave written notes if useful
6. We don’t rush. If you have related questions while we’re there, we’re happy to answer them.

Can a family member be present during the visit?

Absolutely — family members are welcome to be present and are often very helpful. Many visits are booked by adult children on behalf of a parent, and we’re completely comfortable with whoever is in the room. Family members often learn useful things during the visit too.

What if you can’t fix the problem during the visit?

We’re straightforward about this. If a problem requires a part that needs to be ordered, or additional time that won’t fit in the visit, we’ll tell you clearly what’s needed and what options are available — including an honest assessment of whether repair is worth it compared to replacement for older machines. You won’t be charged for work that didn’t achieve anything.

Do you work on weekends?

Yes — we work Saturday 7am–5pm at the same $89/hr rate with no surcharge. Sunday visits can sometimes be arranged for urgent situations — call us to discuss. Our regular hours are Monday–Friday 7am–7pm and Saturday 7am–5pm.

What we fix

Do you do hardware repairs — replacing batteries, fans, screens?

Yes — we replace laptop batteries, cooling fans, and RAM for common laptop brands (HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Toshiba). Screen replacement is available for some models. We carry parts for the most common models, or can source and bring parts for a second visit. We quote on parts before ordering anything. We also do SSD upgrades to fix chronic slowness and freezing on older machines — often the most cost-effective way to extend a laptop’s life by several years.

Do you help with business computers and small business networks?

Yes — we support small businesses across Melbourne at the same $89/hr rate. Common business requests include: setting up shared printers, configuring business email on new computers, Wi-Fi setup for small offices, virus removal, and new computer setup with data transfer. We’re not an enterprise IT company — we’re best suited to small businesses of 1–15 people who need reliable, personal IT support.

There’s a scary popup on my screen saying my computer has a virus — what do I do?

Do not call the number shown on the popup and do not let anyone remote into your computer. These popups are almost always scams — not real Windows or Microsoft warnings. Close the browser (if it won’t close, hold the power button to turn the computer off). Then call us on 0435 955 429 to get it checked properly. See our virus and scam popup guide for more detail on how to tell the difference between a real warning and a scam.

Seniors & NDIS

Do you work with seniors who aren’t very confident with technology?

Yes — many of our most valued clients are seniors who want patient, unhurried, plain-English help. We never rush, never condescend, and we write down clear instructions that make sense for their specific device. We’re comfortable explaining the same thing several different ways until it makes sense. See our seniors and NDIS page and computer lessons for seniors for more.

Can I book on behalf of a parent?

Yes — many visits are booked by adult children on behalf of a parent. When you call, just let us know what the parent needs and what devices they have. It helps to know what specifically is frustrating them or what they want to be able to do. Family members are welcome to be present during the visit and many find it useful to understand what was taught and shown.

Are you NDIS registered?

We hold NDIS Worker Screening clearance. We support plan-managed and self-managed NDIS participants across Melbourne. IT support for NDIS participants typically falls under Assistive Technology or Capacity Building supports depending on the individual’s plan. Please mention that a participant is NDIS-funded when booking so we can discuss the support categories and any paperwork needed. See our seniors and NDIS page for full details.

My parent has dementia — can you still help?

Yes — but the approach changes. For someone with memory challenges, the goal shifts from building new skills to reducing confusion and making existing technology more reliable and less overwhelming. This might mean simplifying the desktop to show only the most-used icons, removing pop-up notifications and update prompts, and creating very clear printed step-by-step guides for specific daily tasks. Please mention this when booking so we can adjust our approach from the start.

Data & files

Will you transfer everything from my old computer to the new one?

Yes — file transfer is included in new computer setup visits. We move photos, documents, music, downloads, email accounts (including old emails), browser bookmarks, desktop shortcuts, and settings. Programs need to be reinstalled (they can’t transfer), but we install the most common ones (browsers, Adobe Reader, etc.) and set up Microsoft 365 if you have a subscription. We also transfer your printer and test it before leaving. See our file transfer guide for what transfers and what doesn’t.

Are my photos and files safe when you’re working on my computer?

Yes. We treat your data carefully and we’re explicit about what we’re doing before any action that could affect files. For significant operations (like Windows reinstall or SSD replacement), we always back up data first before proceeding. If you have important files that aren’t already backed up, we can set up automatic backups as part of the visit — it takes about 10 minutes and means you’re protected going forward.

My old computer stopped turning on — can you still recover my files?

Often yes, depending on what failed. If the computer stopped turning on due to a power failure, battery failure, or Windows startup problem — the hard drive is almost certainly intact and data can be recovered. If the drive itself has failed (usually indicated by clicking or grinding sounds), professional data recovery may still be possible but becomes more complex. When you call, describe what the computer does when you try to turn it on and any sounds it makes — this helps us bring the right equipment. See our computer won’t turn on guide for the data safety breakdown by symptom type.

Mac & Windows

Do you help with Mac computers as well as Windows?

Yes — we support both Mac and Windows. Common Mac jobs include: setting up a new MacBook with email and printer, fixing Wi-Fi connectivity issues, helping with iCloud storage warnings, recovering access to an Apple ID, setting up Time Machine backups, and installing Windows via Boot Camp for households that need both systems. We also help seniors who are new to Mac after switching from Windows.

Windows 10 support ends in October 2025 — do I need to upgrade?

Yes — Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 in October 2025, which means no more security updates. Using an unsupported operating system increases your security risk significantly. The options are:

1. Upgrade to Windows 11 — free if your computer meets the hardware requirements (most computers from 2019 or newer do). We check and upgrade during a visit.

2. Replace the computer — if the hardware doesn’t meet Windows 11 requirements, a new computer with Windows 11 pre-installed is the right move. We can handle the full setup and data transfer.
We check Windows 11 compatibility as part of any visit on a Windows 10 machine and advise you on the best path.

Areas we service

Which Melbourne suburbs do you service?

We cover Melbourne’s eastern, inner-eastern, south-eastern and inner-south suburbs — from Toorak and Camberwell through to Ringwood, Warranwood, and Glen Waverley. We’re expanding coverage regularly. See our full service areas page or call 0435 955 429 to confirm availability in your suburb. If you’re not sure whether we come to your area, just ask — we’ll tell you directly.

Do you travel to outer suburbs or regional areas?

Our regular service area covers the eastern and south-eastern Melbourne suburbs. For suburbs outside our standard area, a small travel surcharge may apply — call us and we’ll let you know immediately whether we can help and what the cost would be. We don’t want to waste your time, so we’ll be upfront.

Booking & availability

How do I book a visit?

Call us on 0435 955 429, email hello@fixable.au, or use the online booking form. We’ll confirm a time that works for you and send a reminder the day before.

How quickly can you come?

Same-day visits are often available for urgent issues, particularly on weekdays. For non-urgent bookings, we can usually schedule within 1–2 business days. Call us directly for the fastest response — we check messages regularly and aim to respond within a few hours during business hours.

What should I have ready before you arrive?

Not much — but it’s helpful to have:

1. The computer (and power cable if it’s a laptop) in the room where you normally use it
2. Any devices you want looked at (printer, phone, tablet) in the same room
3. Access to your Wi-Fi password if we’re working on internet issues — usually on the back of the router
4. If you’re doing a new computer setup: the old computer and its power cable
5. If relevant: the passwords for your email accounts (Gmail, Outlook, etc.)
