NDIS iPad Setup Melbourne —
Funded by Your Plan

Getting an iPad set up for an NDIS participant is one of the most common requests we get. It is fully covered under AT Mentoring. Here is exactly how it works.

Direct Answer

Yes. NDIS can fund in-home iPad setup for self-managed and plan-managed participants under line item 15_300_0103_1_3 (AT Mentoring), Capacity Building — Daily Activity. This covers device setup, apps, Zoom, WhatsApp, email, MyGov and teaching the participant to use it. Price cap: $105.43/hr (Melbourne). Fixable charges $89/hr.

What NDIS iPad Setup Covers

A Fixable iPad setup visit covers everything the participant needs to use their device independently and confidently.

Covered Under AT Mentoring
  • Device setup and configuration
iPad set up from scratch — Apple ID, iCloud, updates, accessibility settings.
  • Zoom for telehealth and family calls
Installed, tested and the participant shown how to start and join calls.
  • WhatsApp and FaceTime
Set up for family contact. Contacts added. Practice calls made.
  • Email setup
Email account on the iPad — reading, writing, sending and receiving.
  • MyGov and Medicare
MyGov account linked on the iPad. Medicare and NDIS portal accessible.
  • Wi-Fi connected and stable
iPad connected to home Wi-Fi. Connection confirmed and tested.
  • One-on-one teaching
Patient, plain-English teaching at the participant’s pace. Written notes left behind.
Not Covered Under AT Mentoring
  • Purchasing the iPad
The NDIS does not fund buying the device under AT Mentoring. Purchasing requires a Capital AT assessment. Once the iPad is purchased, AT Mentoring can fund the setup.
  • App subscriptions
Ongoing app costs or subscriptions are not covered under AT Mentoring.
  • Physical repairs
Cracked screens or hardware damage are not covered under AT Mentoring — they require a separate repair pathway.

Need to purchase an iPad first? Talk to your Support Coordinator or an AT Assessor. Once the device is approved and purchased, Fixable can do the in-home setup visit.

What to Expect

What a Fixable iPad Setup Visit Looks Like

Most first visits take 1.5 to 2 hours. We work at the participant’s pace — no rushing, no jargon.

1

Arrive and listen

We sit with the participant, find out what they want to do with the iPad and what matters most to them. Family or carers are welcome to be present.

2

Set up the device

Apple ID created or signed into, iCloud set up, software updated, accessibility settings configured for the participant’s needs.

3

Install and test key apps

Zoom, WhatsApp, FaceTime, email, MyGov — installed, configured and tested. Practice calls made. Everything confirmed working.

4

Teach at the participant’s pace

We show the participant how to use each thing — slowly, with repetition, no rushing. We explain in plain English and answer every question.

5

Leave written notes

At the end of the visit, we write down step-by-step instructions for the participant to keep. Plain English. No technical jargon.

First visit not enough? That is completely normal. AT Mentoring supports multiple sessions over time. Many participants benefit from follow-up visits to build confidence and practice new skills. Each session is billed at the same $89/hr rate.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. In-home iPad setup is covered under NDIS AT Mentoring (line item 15_300_0103_1_3, Capacity Building — Daily Activity) for self-managed and plan-managed participants. This includes device setup, apps, Zoom, WhatsApp, email, MyGov and teaching. The NDIS does not fund purchasing the iPad itself — only the setup and teaching sessions.

  • Most first visits take 1.5 to 2 hours. We work at the participant’s pace — if more time is needed, we keep going. Fixable charges $89/hr with no minimum. Many participants find one visit is enough to get started. Others benefit from follow-up sessions to build confidence. There is no limit on how many AT Mentoring sessions can be claimed — as long as they are reasonable and necessary.

  • Purchasing an iPad through NDIS requires a separate Capital AT process — an AT Assessor writes a report recommending the device as a reasonable and necessary support, and the NDIA approves the funding. This is a different process from AT Mentoring. Once the iPad is purchased, Fixable can set it up under the AT Mentoring line item.

  • We set up whatever the participant needs — most commonly Zoom (for telehealth and family calls), WhatsApp, FaceTime, email, MyGov and Medicare. We also set up any other apps the participant uses or wants to use. We test everything before we leave and make sure the participant can use each one independently.

  • Yes. Fixable is an in-home service — we come to the participant wherever they live. There is no call-out fee. We cover Melbourne’s eastern and inner suburbs including Boroondara, Manningham, Whitehorse, Maroondah, Knox, Monash, Stonnington, Bayside and surrounding areas. Call 0435 955 429 to confirm availability in your suburb.
